Quotas: Must we be trapped within the BN mindset?

A friend of mine, a very good friend, commented that this country is so unfair. A person who gets only 5As in SPM can get a scholarship to further his studies, whereas another guy with 7As cannot get the same chance. All because the 5As guy is a Malay. He blames it squarely on the quota system.

To put things in context, this friend of mine is a Chinese. I understand the anger of the Chinese community. I know a lot of them agrees with Lee Kuan Yew's statement that they are marginalised here.

I tried to reason with my friend (how effective it was, i do not know) that we are discussing this within the Barisan Nasional framework. We believe whatever their leaders say.

UMNO leaders would want to be seen as suppressing the other races, particularly the Chinese, so that their members will see them as heroes who would stand up to the ungrateful newcomers. MCA leaders in the mean time just love this situation, they too can play hero by standing up to UMNO to defend the Chinese community rights.

I said to my friend, the wealth of this nation should be enough to provide for every deserving and needy citizen. There is no need for quotas and special provision when there is enough for all.

One might ask how can we have enough for everybody when the country is running a deficit budget. I believe a large chunk of the resources go to waste or to support the corrupt lifestyle of the BN leaders. If we prevent all the corruption i am confident we can have so much surplus.

But that remains to be seen. It won't happen until the Barisan Rakyat gets a chance to form government. It's hard work, but we, no matter of what ethnicity, must do our utmost to make it a reality.

Malaysians deserve better. Therefore we must first eject these clowns and jesters lead by Abdullah. We owe it to ourselves and the future generation.
